SOMERSET REBELS

REBELS ON 'FOUR' WHEELS !

The 20th April brings a new opportunity to Speedway fans ... Seeing their heroes racing on FOUR wheels on the grass!!

South Somerset Autograss Club has organised a 'fun' challenge in which riders will become drivers of powerful single seater motorbike powered machines (amongst many) and show us how they can perform on grass instead of shale!

Our neighbours in Highbridge have seen the cars at the Oaktree Arean and now we invite you to watch us at The Somerset Raceway (just next door) for a day of exciting motorsport and to see an Autograss/Speedway first!

Details of start times, entry etc  are on the Raceday Info page so come on down and see what National AutograssRacing is all about!

this report has been kindly produced by Ian Belcher - Somerset Rebels Press Office:

Although just over a month into the 2008 speedway season, the Somerset 'Sharp' Rebels have already experienced both the highs and lows that befalls any sporting team.  The season commenced with the group stages of the Premier Trophy, this being run on a regional basis, the winners of the four groups progressing through to a knock out competition.  Somerset's start to the Trophy matches could not have been better as they beat local rivals Newport both home and away, the home victory going in the record books as the Rebel's biggest ever home win.

They then travelled to Reading for what looked on paper to be a tough encounter, the 'Racers' being tipped by many pundits to be challenging for honours this year, but the Rebels made light of this as they came away with a magnificent victory and suddenly progress through to the semi-final stages for the first time in their history became a more than distinct possibility.

Sport has a habit of coming back to bite you when you least expect it, and a bad defeat at the Isle of Wight quickly followed by Reading gaining revenge for that home defeat by winning at the Oak Tree Arena just over a week ago meant that, at the time of writing, Somerset's chances of making those semi-finals were fast receding.

On Sunday 20th at The National Autograss Somerset Raceway it is hoped that both Jordan Frampton and Simon Walker, respectively Somerset’s Most Improved Rider and Rider of the Year from last season, will be competing this afternoon, though Walker’s participation will depend on whether or not he is required to ride for his Polish club, Lodz, in their opening league fixture today.

Joining them will be Danny Warwick, who although riding for Reading this season, was something of a cult hero amongst Somerset fans when he rode for the Rebels last season, there is never a dull moment when the ‘Rasta Racer’ takes to the track.  Also taking part will be James Holder, who rides for the Isle of Wight, and is in his debut season of racing in the UK.  James is the elder brother of the current Australian speedway champion, Chris Holder who currently rides for Poole Pirates in speedway’s Elite League.

The Somerset Rebels are our neighbours at Highbridge.

We would like to thank the Rebels for their support and encourangement this year.
